Biography:ArdemPatapoutianisamolecularbiologistspecializing in sensory transduction. His research has led to theidentification of novel ion channels and receptors activated bytemperature, mechanical force, and increased cell volume.Patapoutian was born in Lebanon in 1967. He graduated fromUCLA in 1990 and received his Ph.D. in 1996. He joined thefaculty ofScripps Research in 2000, where he is currently aProfessor in the Department of Neuroscience. He also held aposition at the Genomics Institute of The Novartis ResearchFoundation.Patapoutian isafellowofthe American Association for theAdvancement ofScience(2016),amember of the NationalAcademyofSciences(2017)andamemberofAmericanAcademy of Arts and Sciences (2020). He won the 2021 NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine (with David Julius).
